Central Florida freshman Melvin Mercedes was selected by the Oakland A's in the 16th round of the MLB Draft on Wednesday, marking the second consecutive day a prospect was plucked directly from the Patriot roster.
Mercedes, a slick-fielding shortstop, speedy baserunner and All-FCSAA second-team selection, went with the 499th overall pick.
His selection gives CF two of the top 500 overall picks of the MLB Draft; the St. Louis Cardinals drafted Patriot outfielder Yoenny Gonzalez in Tuesday's eighth round.
A native of Bronx, N.Y., Mercedes hit .325 with 10 extra-base hits, 26 runs scored and 14 stolen bases as the Patriots' leadoff man.
