Former Central Florida pitcher Juan Perez has emerged as a lights-out closer for the Asheville Tourists, the Class A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
A 6-0, 190-pound righthander out of Orlando, Perez followed his tenure at CF with a standout season at Bethune-Cookman, where in 2010 he earned first-team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honors and set a new single-season school record with 10 saves. Last June, the Rockies selected him in the 18th round of the MLB draft.
Perez flashed promise in his first minor-league assignment later in 2010, posting a 3-1 record and 2.60 ERA in 21 appearances for the Casper Ghosts, Colorado's rookie league outfit. He graduated to the Class A Tourists for 2011 and has enjoyed continued success, racking up 3 wins and 3 saves and posting a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings of work across 8 appearances.

CF Patriots 5, Santa Fe 2; Santa Fe 13, CF 2 (Softball)
Central Florida celebrated its softball Sophomore Day on Saturday with a rousing 5-2 win over rival Santa Fe.
Sophomore Jessica Knight and Miranda Anderson hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and launch a celebration that provided a cathartic final act to a frustrating season. Knight, the dangerous power hitter who doubles as the team's pitching ace, retired the Saints without incident in the seventh to finish off a complete-game victory.
Trailing 2-1 entering the fifth inning, a Patriots team determined to end its season on a positive note manufactured the tying run. Sophomore Megan David delivered the timely hit, sending a bloop single to left that plated Anderson from second base.
Kasie Cheney led off the sixth with a single, and she advanced to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts. But the sputtering rally received a jolt when Knight turned on the first pitch she saw and smashed it well over the fence in left-centerfield, allowing the Patriots' versatile leader to circle the bases and soak in the cheers reigning down from the fans, family, friends and teammates gathered for the occasion. The euphoria only grew when Anderson, the team's freshman power-hitting phenom, knocked a nearly-identical home run to cap the game-winning 2-out outburst.
The Patriots lost the second game of the doubleheader 13-2 as Anderson added her second home run of the afternoon.
CF (15-42, 3-19 MFC) hosts St. Johns River on Monday in a makeup of a doubleheader postponed by weather.

Pasco-Hernando 5, CF Patriots 0 (Baseball)
Central Florida took a 5-0 non-conference loss at Pasco-Hernando on Friday. The loss dropped the Patriots to 20-30-1 entering the final week of the regular season.
Of greater import is Saturday's Mid-Florida Conference matchup with Daytona State, set for 1 p.m. at Goodlett Field. The Patriots need a win to keep their dwindling postseason hopes alive, especially considering second-place St. Johns River's win at Santa Fe on Friday. The Vikings' victory makes them 12-8, a full 3 games ahead of 9-11 CF with just 4 games remaining. Lake-Sumter and Daytona are also involved in the MFC scrum, in which the second-place finisher will join runaway champ Santa Fe at the state tournament in Lakeland.

CF Patriots 8, Seminole 7 (Baseball)
Central Florida furthered its postseason hopes Monday at Goodlett Field with a 7-6 win over Seminole that featured 2 late-inning comebacks and an unusual deciding play.
Trailing 6-5 entering the eighth, Christian Coburn rocketed a line drive just fair down the third-base line for a standup double, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After working the count full, Bradley Goodson drove the freshman home and tied the game at 6 with a sharp single to left field. Josh Whitchurch capped the rally with a towering 2-out fly ball to center that found a spot on the grass just shy of the warning track, scoring Goodson for the go-ahead run.
A persistent Seminole squad scored in the top of the ninth to tie the game again and force a second Patriot response.
Nick Radomski started that effort with a leadoff single, and moved up a base on a bunt single by Yoenny Gonzalez. Casey Smit followed with a 1-out single to load the bases. Coburn, this time finishing off the rally rather than sparking it, calmly drew a walk on 4 straight pitches to bring pinch-runner Brandin Barroso home from third and end the game with a walk-off base on balls.

Santa Fe 5, CF Patriots 3 (Baseball)
Central Florida came up short at first-place Santa Fe on Wednesday, dropping a Mid-Florida Conference baseball game by a score of 5-3.
Bradley Goodson had 2 hits and scored 2 runs and Scott Schaub had 2 RBI to lead CF, which scored 2 runs in the eighth inning to take a final shot at a streaking Saints team threatening to run away with the conference crown.
The setback ended the Patriots' own four-game win streak, and damages their hopes of securing one of the two state tournament berths allotted the MFC. CF (17-27-1, 7-9 MFC) remains tangled among Daytona State, Lake-Sumter and Seminole in back of frontrunning Santa Fe and second-place St. Johns River. The Patriots have an opportunity to gain ground on SJR when they visit Palatka on Friday.

UFL's Omaha Nighthawks Look to Retain CF Alum Clinton Hart
The Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League have included former CF Patriots baseball star Clinton Hart on their list of protected players for the 2011 season.
A former standout outfielder at CF, Hart went on to play seven NFL seasons, primarily with the San Diego Chargers. He joined the Nighthawks for their successful debut season in 2010, leading the team with 2 interceptions in its 8-game schedule.
Omaha's move to protect its core players does not guarantee that they will return. The Nighthawks and the UFL's other four teams are now free to begin negotiating contracts with the players they've protected. Read more about the UFL here.

Kevin Foster Named an NJCAA All-American
Central Florida sophomore Kevin Foster has been named to the NJCAA All-America third team.
The 6-8 power forward was a prep star at nearby Lakeland Kathleen, then a promising freshman at George Mason University before transferring to CF for his sophomore season. He led the team in scoring and rebounding while guiding the Patriots to a Mid-Florida Conference title and the state's final four. CF Sharpshooter Miljanic Selects Lynn
Two-year Central Florida hoops star Slobodan Miljanic will stay in-state to continue his collegiate career. The Patriot sharpshooter has committed to play at Lynn University, an NCAA Division II program in Boca Raton. Miljanic scored 13.7 points per game and shot 44 percent from 3-point range in 2010-11 while helping the Patriots to a second consecutive FCCAA State Tournament berth. The team's only returning sophomore, the Montenegro native emerged as a leader for the new-look squad as CF recaptured the Mid-Florida Conference title.
Miljanic will be a welcome addition at Lynn. The Fighting Knights finished 7-20, including a 5-11 record in the Sunshine State Conference, in a disappointing 2010-11 season. Despite those struggles, Lynn has been a consistent winning program under tenured head coach Scott McMillin, including a national semifinal appearance in 2004-05, and expects to return three of last season's four double-digit scorers in 2011-12.
Miljanic called Lynn a "perfect fit" and cited the coaching staff and incoming recruiting class as reasons for his decision. The 6-7 swingman also garnered interest from a list of schools including Barry, Florida Tech, Eckerd, Albany, IPFW, Monmouth and Rutgers.
