Central Florida took a hit in the Mid-Florida Conference standings and missed an opportunity to earn head coach Marty Smith his 500th victory Wednesday with a 9-3 loss to Santa Fe.
With the loss, Smith stays stuck at 499 career victories. His next opportunity to reach the milestone comes Friday as CF and Santa Fe complete their home-and-home series at Gainesville.
Of more immediate concern to the Patriots is their continuing slide in the MFC standings. CF (8-22-1, 1-4 MFC) hasn't won a conference game since its opener March 2, costing it valuable ground in the race for one of the conference's two postseason spots.
CF was held scoreless until the seventh, when it plated a run on a wild pitch and another on Josh Whitchurch's RBI groundout. Nick Radomski drove in Casey Smit with a groundout in the ninth..
