Central Florida picked up a hard-won Mid-Florida Conference baseball victory on Saturday at Goodlett Field, erasing an eighth-inning deficit en route to a 6-5 win over first-place St. Johns River.
CF entered the eighth down 5-3 but staged one of its patented late rallies to overtake the Vikings. Casey Smit drew a leadoff walk, and Bradley Goodson joined him on the base paths with a base hit. Josh Whitchurch drove in Smit with a ground-rule double to right, and Scott Schaub followed with a line-drive single up the middle that brought home Goodson and Whitchurch and put the Patriots ahead.
Kyle Moeder made sure the lead held up, retiring SJR in order in the top of the ninth.
CF (12-24-1, 3-6 MFC) looks to make up more ground in the conference race Monday as it completes the home-and-home with SJR at Palatka.
