Central Florida won its Mid-Florida Conference opener on Wednesday, earning a 5-3 victory at Seminole State.
The pitchers led the way as the Patriots successfully shook off a disappointing non-conference season. Cody Lewis threw 7 solid innings, yielding 3 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 6, and Kyle Leja burned through the eighth and ninth innings with six consecutive outs.
Scott Schaub led the offense with 2 hits and 2 runs, while Casey Elkins, Casey Smit and Josh Whitchurch each had an RBI.
The victory should help CF (7-17-1, 1-0 MFC) cast aside any doubts created by its poor non-conference record, as FCCAA teams reach the postseason by virtue of conference records only. A top-two finish in the MFC puts the Patriots in the state tournament in May.
CF hosts Michigan's Jackson CC in non-conference action Thursday at 2 p.m., then completes its home-and-home MFC series with Seminole on Friday at 3 p.m.
