CF Patriots to Honor Alum Ricardo Ratliffe at Season Opener Monday

The College of Central Florida will honor the most accomplished student-athlete in its history on Monday, Nov. 1, as 2009-2010 NJCAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year Ricardo Ratliffe returns to see his No. 20 Patriots jersey retired.

The ceremony will take place at halftime of the opener for the 2010-2011 CF men's basketball season. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the CF Gymnasium at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

“Ricardo is now a major part of College of Central Florida history, and we’re thrilled that he will be with us as we honor his amazing career in a Patriot uniform,” said CF Director of Athletics Bob Zelinski. “We expect his jersey, and the legacy it symbolizes, to serve as a constant source of inspiration to future classes of Patriot student-athletes.”

CF President, Dr. Charles Dassance said: “Ricardo has made us all very proud and we are pleased to recognize his accomplishments in this way.”

Ratliffe, now entering his junior season at the University of Missouri, collected unprecedented accolades in his two seasons as a Patriot. As a freshman, the Hampton, Va., native set the school’s single-season scoring record with 798 points, earning first-team All-State honors from the Florida Community College Activities Association and first-team All-American status from the National Junior College Athletic Association. By the start of his sophomore season, the 6-8 power forward was considered the premier two-year college prospect in the country by a consensus of national recruiting services.

Even while navigating an intense recruiting process involving some of the premier programs in the NCAA, Ratliffe turned in a sophomore season that more than lived up to his growing reputation. He again set the school’s single-season scoring mark with 855 points, producing a career total of 1,653 points that shattered a CF record that had stood since 1985. He was named the FCCAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year and a first-team NJCAA All-American for a second consecutive season, then collected the highest individual honor presented by the NJCAA: the David Rowlands Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award, selected from all competitive men’s sports across the NJCAA’s 525 member schools nationwide.

CF also enjoyed remarkable team success in Ratliffe’s two seasons. The Patriots finished a combined 47-18, including a 15-3 Mid-Florida Conference record, while claiming an MFC championship and making consecutive FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament appearances. Prior to the 2009-2010 season, CF earned national attention with a No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Preseason Poll.

Ratliffe will continue to be a source of pride for CF fans as his promising career moves forward. He has already added to his list of awards at the NCAA level as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, a product of the significant and immediate impact he is expected to have in one of the nation’s most competitive conferences for the nationally ranked Missouri Tigers.

Lady Patriots Set for Final Tune-Up at Tallahassee Jamboree

The Central Florida Lady Patriots are among 14 women's basketball teams gathering in Tallahassee on Saturday for the Southern Challenge Jamboree, an annual preseason showcase that offers participating coaches one last-minute look at their squads before the games begin to count in November.

CF opens its regular-season schedule on Nov. 5, facing St. Petersburg in Gainesville. The Lady Patriots' first home game is Nov. 19, the first day of the three-day CF Shootout.

CF Alum Ricardo Ratliffe's 32 Points Leads All Scorers in Mizzou Black & Gold Game

Ricardo Ratliffe was a regular 30-point scorer in his two years with the Central Florida Patriots. One game - albeit a scrimmage - into his NCAA career, that hasn't changed.

The junior power forward scored a game-high 32 points in his Tigers coming-out party, the clear standout among the organized chaos of the team's intrasquad showcase.

From the Missourian:
The sloppy play resulted in 45 turnovers. However, through the haze of turnovers, Ratliffe continually put down shots, scoring on 12-of-16 attempts and making 8-of-11 free throws. Whether it was putting back one of his five offensive rebounds, scoring a layup in transition, or slamming home a dunk, any loose ball around the rim seemed to find Ratliffe’s grasp. Missouri coach Mike Anderson noticed.

“I think he’s a guy who’s a magnet to the ball,” Anderson said. “You can see he goes and get the ball off the glass. That’s what good players do. If they are not getting touches or guys aren’t getting it to them, they will go get it.”

CF Patriots Men's Basketball 2010-11 Preview: The Frontcourt

Center Alhaji Fullah gives the Patriots
a formidable presence in the paint.
The rebuilt 2010-11 CF frontcourt has big shoes to fill, but head coach Tim Ryan has assembled a talented and versatile group of forwards and centers that should keep alive the Patriots' streak of annual postseason contention.

The roster is headlined by a potential All-American in 6-8 power forward Kevin Foster, an elite prep performer at Lakeland Kathleen who flashed glimpses of his upside in a promising freshman season at George Mason University. Foster will be given every opportunity to put up big scoring numbers in his lone year at CF before returning to the Division I level with Fresno State. His smooth, accomplished offensive game should prove a major problem for opposing defenses.

Whereas many two-year college players of Foster's size would be forced to log the bulk of their minutes at center, CF has the luxury of pairing him with a pure center in British import Alhaji Fullah. A rugged 6-8, 230-pound banger, Fullah will provide a heavy dose of defense, shot-blocking and rebounding while freeing Foster from the burden of guarding the other team's primary post threat.

The flexibility of CF's roster is perhaps best embodied by sophomore Mathiang Muo, a transfer from Northeastern with the size, length, skills and savvy to man any position on the court. The Sudanese native will log heavy minutes at both forward positions while giving Ryan the option of  fielding a big lineup with the 6-6 Muo at the shooting guard spot. Whatever combination of Patriots proves most effective, Muo is likely to be a part of it.

Freshman Manny Dias is another versatile prospect with the combination of ball-handling, shooting and rebounding abilities to play both forward positions. A defensive specialist with an edgy, physical approach to the game, the 6-6 Boston native is the kind of player opponents dread lining up against. And that makes him a very welcome addition to CF's new-look frontcourt.

The team's lone returning sophomore, swingman Slobodan Miljanic should now reap the benefits of the freshman season he spent adjusting to American basketball and college life. His remarkable accuracy and range from outside should earn him his share of minutes once the season starts; his leadership and hard-earned confidence have already been beneficial in the locker room.

The Patriots picked up some valuable frontcourt depth late in the summer in a pair of Big Apple-bred forwards. Freshmen Shea Spence and Joshua McNally-Bibbins have the kind of high-level high school experience that translates well to the NJCAA level and the potential to make valuable contributions to their new squad.

CF Men, Women Ranked Sixth in Preseason State Poll

The CF men's and women's basketball teams are each ranked sixth in their respective preseason coaches' polls, released Wednesday by the FCCAA.

CF is one of the three Mid-Florida Conference teams in the men's top 10; defending MFC champion Daytona State is at No. 5 and rival Santa Fe is ranked ninth. The same schools join CF in the women's rankings, with Santa Fe checking in at No. 7 and Daytona State at No. 9.

CF Patriots Men's Basketball 2010-11 Preview: The Backcourt

CF sophomore Addison Smith leads the Patriots
through a preseason stretching session.
The strength of the 2010-11 Central Florida Patriots is its versatility, and nowhere is that more evident than in the backcourt.

Division I transfers A.J. Holland and Addison Smith give Patriots coach Tim Ryan a pair of nearly-interchangeable pieces to build his guard rotation around. Each is comfortable bringing the ball up court and initiating the offense or playing off the ball and awaiting the opportunity to knock down a shot or attack the rim. Either player may take the reins of the offense on any given play, presenting an ongoing matchup problem for opponents. Defensively, both 6-2 sophomores have the size to defend either guard position.

While Holland and Smith have a year each of NCAA experience to draw upon, freshman Hunter Williams is learning on the fly. Early returns indicate that the former Ocala Forest High School star is a quick study. The 6-1 guard has turned in a standout training camp, making a strong case for an immediate and significant role in Ryan's rotation.

Gainesville native Brian Pace came from well off the radar to land a spot on the CF roster, but he's quickly proven that he's right where he belongs. The muscular 5-11 guard, who didn't play organized high school basketball, has impressed with his toughness and scoring ability. Pace projects as a productive change-of-pace guard logging heavy minutes off the Patriot bench.

Redshirt freshman Steven Shipwash, familiar with the CF system after spending 2009-10 as a practice player, gives the Patriots a solid playmaker and shooter off the bench. Former Shores Christian Academy star Damion Robinson is a tough all-around wing with above-average athleticism.

Sophomore Slobodan Miljanic Ready for Leadership Role

Change is an unavoidable fact of life at the two-year level of basketball. Presented as evidence, the case of Central Florida Patriots sophomore Slobodan Miljanic.

This time last year, the sharpshooting Montenegro native was one of just a handful of new additions to a 2009-10 CF team returning eight players, including all of its starters, from the previous season. Among his fellow new Patriots was Justin Cecil, a transfer from Division I North Florida who shared Miljanic's size, position and long-range shooting acumen.

Already facing the huge transition to American college life, the 6-7 swingman's freshman season at CF held plenty of on-the-court obstacles as well. And while he showed flashes of promise in his first season of stateside basketball, he was also admittedly overwhelmed at times.

"Last year, I didn't play an American style of basketball," said Miljanic, citing a level of speed and athleticism he hadn't encountered in European competition. "I think I'll play better this year, since I'm used to it now."

The start of his sophomore season presents Miljanic with an odd mirror-image of his first year at CF. This time, most of his teammates share the experience of being new to the Patriots program, while he is the lone returning scholarship player. Cecil has moved on to Mercer, but he's been replaced by two more Division I transfers in Mathiang Muo and A.J. Holland, players who aren't long-range specialists but do threaten to absorb a lot of the available minutes on the wing.

Miljanic displays his newfound confidence when discussing his new situation. After a summer spent improving his ball-handling skills and honing his already-deadly outside shot, Miljanic knows his game is a perfect fit on the deep and talented squad coach Tim Ryan has assembled in the wake of the offseason's almost-total roster turnover.

"We can be really good as a team this year. We've got guys who can play multiple positions. Everyone can shoot," Miljanic said. "We just try to get better every day, every practice. That's our goal. That's why we're here."

Miljanic and his new Patriot teammates open the 2010-11 season Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Aiken Tech.

The Countdown Begins: Patriot Basketball Just One Week Away

The offseason is long, but it doesn't last forever. In just one week, this offseason officially reaches its end. On Monday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m., your Central Florida Patriots open the 2010-11 men's basketball season against South Carolina's Aiken Tech. (That countdown timer to your left will help you remember.)

Fans who grew comfortable with the CF team of the last two seasons, centered around the singular talents of Ricardo Ratliffe and a core that remained largely intact from its freshman to sophomore year, will now be introduced to an almost entirely new group of Patriots. Over the next week this site, along with the official CF Patriots pages on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, will help you get to know the unfamiliar student-athletes who will pull on the familiar uniform of the Central Florida Patriots. By Monday, you'll be ready to root for both the laundry and the young men wearing it.

There are a lot of ways to show your Patriot fandom: spread the word to future fans on Facebook; get instant scores and breaking news on Twitter; and watch highlights and post-game interviews on YouTube. But there's one way that beats all of the above combined: come out to the game. Admission is free to CF students, faculty and staff, and remarkably inexpensive for everyone else. If you've never seen a game in person, it's a higher level of competition than you think.

In short, on Monday night, the best game in town is back on.

CF at the Forefront of 'New Era' of Local Volleyball

Excitement is building for the launch of the Central Florida Patriots women's volleyball program, set to debut in the fall of 2011. In an article published Sunday, Jaime Voisine of the Ocala Star-Banner places CF at the forefront of a "new era" of Marion County volleyball:
Along with the spike in local interest for club volleyball, the impending debut of the College of Central Florida's women's volleyball program next fall is sure to help upgrade the level of play.

“The more exposure there is to volleyball, the area will be better for it,” (Ocala Power Volleyball Academy's Jeff) Reavis said about the upstart program. “I mean the Gainesville Juniors and the Gainesville area, it's exposure was the Unviersity of Florida. So the start of the volleyball program at CF is going to bring more exposure to kids of volleyball.”

With area talent on the rise, the hope is that that CF program will become a pipeline of sorts for local girls to get their foot in the door at the collegiate level.

“I'm excited about the CF program,” (Marion County Juniors founder) Steve Hubner said. “The program is really going to help club directors and give local girls another opportunity to stay home and play.”

UPDATED: Patriot Hoops Alumni Set for Next-Level Debuts

While it is always the goal of any Central Florida Patriots team to win as many games as possible, the program's vision goes well beyond simple wins and losses. One of the primary missions of CF athletics is to prepare student-athletes to continue their academic and athletic careers when their time in a Patriots uniform ends. As the 2010-11 NCAA and NAIA basketball seasons approach, a remarkable number of former CF stars are embarking on the next phase of their basketball journeys. Here's a quick primer:

Ricardo Ratliffe, Missouri

Ratliffe is the rare two-year college prospect who will be asked to make a major and immediate impact for a team with legitimate national championship aspirations. Lady Patriots All-American Alberta Auguste aced her transition, helping the University of Tennessee women's basketball team to consecutive NCAA titles in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Now it's Ratliffe's turn. The 6-8 power forward has been heralded as the low-post presence needed for the Tigers to extend their perennial tournament run by a couple of victories, and the expectations were made official when he was named the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year.

Markeshia Grant, South Carolina

The catalyst of last year's Lady Patriots squad joins a talented Gamecocks roster well-positioned to ascend the SEC standings. Head coach Dawn Staley enters her third season with the program, and her history indicates that this is the year South Carolina fans can expect to see major progress. As for Grant, she can only benefit from having perhaps the best point guard in women's basketball history showing her the way.

Justin Cecil, Mercer

The sharpshooting wing's knack for the timely 3-pointer will be a welcome addition for a Bears program hoping to build on its surprise run to the Atlantic Sun Conference championship game a year ago. Cecil should step right in as a Division I contributor, having spent his freshman year with A-Sun rival North Florida.

Jeff Neal, Florida A & M

Despite sharing a frontcourt with the top two-year recruit in Ratliffe, the 6-6 center and Ocala Forest High School graduate made enough of an impression to earn a spot at the Division I level. He'll bring a needed physical presence to a Rattlers program looking to slither to the top of the MEAC standings.

Breanna Fort, Clayton State

An All-American performer at CF, the 5-10 Hawthorne product has proven herself at the NCAA level. Fort averaged 7 points and 6 rebounds per game as a junior in 2009-10, earning 18 starts, and she figures to be a fixture of the Lakers' lineup again as a senior.

Travis Johnson, West Virginia Wesleyan

Johnson surpassed all expectations at CF, earning and keeping a spot in the starting lineup and boosting his recruiting stock in the process. Jeff Price, a former NBA scout and the newly-hired coach of the Division II Bobcats, saw enough to make the 6-1 point guard the first signing of his tenure.

Amber Powe, Delta State

An all-conference performer at CF, Powe returns to her Mississippi roots hoping to help the Division II Lady Statesmen make good on lofty expectations: rival coaches picked DSU as the preseason favorite to win the Gulf South Conference tournament.

Olivia Nino, Louisiana-Lafayette

The talented forward should play a significant role as the Ragin' Cajuns look to make up ground in the Sun Belt Conference.

Rahshon Tabb and Josh Proctor, West Virginia Tech

The NAIA school got a major infusion of talent when Patriot teammates Tabb and Proctor elected to sign on with the Golden Bears. Tabb's deadly outside shooting will spread the floor and make room for Proctor to manuever down low.

Daniel Chatchou, Truett-McConnell

The promising CF freshman of 2009-10 figures to take a central role at the NAIA level, giving the Bears a needed presence in the paint.

Clinton Hart Dominates as Nighthawks Handle Hartford

CF baseball alumnus and NFL veteran Clinton Hart turned in a dominant effort on Saturday, recording nine total tackles, one tackle for a loss and an interception as the UFL-leading Omaha Nighthawks defeated the Hartford Colonials 19-14.

Omaha enjoys a well-earned bye next week, then puts its 3-1 record on the line against the Las Vegas Locomotives on Oct. 28. Local fans' best opportunity to see Hart in action comes a week later, as the Nighthawks visit Orlando's Citrus Bowl for a Nov. 5 matchup against the Florida Tuskers.

CF Baseball Star Casey Smit Commits to South Carolina

Central Florida sophomore Casey Smit will continue his career at the highest level of NCAA baseball. The hard-hitting infielder has verbally committed to transfer next year to the University of South Carolina and join the 2010 College World Series champion Gamecocks.

"I'm excited," Smit said. "Reality is setting in."

A prep standout at Tampa Alonso High School, Smit filed an impressive freshman year for the Patriots in the spring of 2010, hitting .291 with 12 doubles in 46 games. For his efforts, he was among three players to represent CF in last month's FCCAA All-Star Game.

That's where Smit's recruiting stock skyrocketed. Smit hit three sharp line drives off of the finest pitching the FCCAA has to offer, notching a double and two singles and creating a buzz among the assembled scouts and coaches in attendances. The Gamecocks were in touch the next day.

"He was the best performer there," said Patriots head coach Marty Smith.

Smit's whirlwind recruiting experience continued on his Oct. 9 official visit to Carolina, as he watched the Gamecocks upset No. 1 Alabama in front of nearly 83,000 people at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Smit is set to join Nick Ebert and Brian Buscher in a pipeline of Patriot products to man the infield in Columbia. Ebert played a role on the Gamecocks' NCAA championship squad last season, while Buscher parlayed his standout college career into a seven-year pro career marked by 164 games at the major-league level with the Minnesota Twins. Buscher figures to have a central role in Smit's development, having recently joined the Gamecocks' coaching staff. Smit will also find another recent CF student-athlete on campus in women's basketball player Markeshia Grant.

Smith expects Smit to capably fill the role the Gamecocks will lay out for him.

"He's a versatile infielder that will give them some depth," said Smith, who plans to shift Smit to second base after a freshman year spent primarily at third. "And he'll give them a solid left-handed stick."

Smit is already confident he'll step in and contribute immediately. Another year of seasoning in a Patriots uniform can only help.

"I feel like I'm ready for next year," Smit said. "Just keep working hard this year and getting better."

CF Alum Ricardo Ratliffe Named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year

Ricardo Ratliffe's historic career at Central Florida has led to exceedingly high expectations at the University of Missouri. Those rumors of expected greatness have now been added to the official record, however, as the 6-9 power forward has been voted the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

CF Sophomore Kevin Foster Commits to Fresno State

Kevin Foster came to Central Florida a Division I-tested player, and to Division I he shall return. A full month before pulling on a Patriots jersey for the first time, the former George Mason standout has verbally committed to transfer to Fresno State following his sophomore season at CF.

California is like a "home away from home," said Foster, an all-state prep performer at Lakeland Kathleen. "It's just like Florida."

The 6-8 power forward flashed plenty of promise in his year at George Mason, particularly in a February stretch that earned him Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honors. Foster scored 22 points on 11-for-16 shooting and collected 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in a Feb. 16 game against William & Mary; four days later, he notched his first career double-double with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort against College of Charleston.

Foster projects to play a central role for CF in the coming season, teaming with fellow Division I transfers Addison Smith, A.J. Holland and Mathiang Muo to bring some valuable experience to a program that returns just one member of its 2009-10 roster.

As a junior, Foster will join a program with a lot going for it, including perennial contention in the tough Western Athletic Conference, a tenured head coach in Steve Cleveland, and a recent NBA lottery pick in Paul George.

Hart's Nighthawks Get the Best of Culpepper's Mountain Lions

Former Central Florida Patriots baseball star Clinton Hart and his Omaha Nighthawks earned a 20-17 win over fellow Ocalan Daunte Culpepper's Sacramento Mountain Lions in United Football League action Saturday, the latest entry in a friendly rivalry that originated on Florida prep gridirons, continued in the NFL and lives on in the UFL.

Hart's Nighthawks defensive unit held Sacramento to 243 total yards for the game and just one touchdown after halftime. The victory improved the Nighthawks to 2-0 and kept them alone atop the UFL standings.

CF Men's, Women's Hoops Open Fall Practice

Both Central Florida basketball teams officially opened fall practice on Friday, beginning formal preparations for a regular season that is now just a month away. Visit the CF Patriots Facebook page for the first photos of the 2010-11 Patriots and Lady Patriots in action.

CF's Clinton Hart, Ocala's Daunte Culpepper Face Off Saturday

Hart
Two of the premier athletes in local sports lore share the same field on Saturday, as Clinton Hart's Omaha Nighthawks take on Daunte Culpepper's Sacramento Mountain Lions in a United Football League game.

Hart, a former CF Patriots baseball player and seven-year NFL veteran defensive back, has a long history with Culpepper, the former Ocala Vanguard star and NFL All-Pro quarterback. Excerpting liberally from ufl-football.com:
The quarterback Omaha will be trying to slow down this weekend already has plenty of NFL experience. Former Minnesota Vikings and Oakland Raiders standout Daunte Culpepper leads the Sacramento offense and is coming off a 374-yard passing performance in the Mountain Lions' 24-20 win over Florida Saturday night.
Hart and Culpepper are already familiar with each other dating back to their high school days when the two were prep rivals at neighboring high schools in northern Florida.
“I'm excited to play against him,” Hart said. “We played against each other in basketball in high school and were good friends...He went around and dunked on everyone on the team. He's a great athlete.”
The two also faced off in the NFL twice a season when they played for AFC West contenders. Hart played for San Diego during Culpepper's days with the Raiders. Hart said his familiarity with this week's opposing QB might give the Nighthawks an advantage as Omaha installs its game plan.
“I can pinpoint certain things he does every time he starts to pass,” Hart said. “He's a great deep-ball thrower. He and Randy Moss was the tandem in Minnesota where they got the deep ball going. He still has that going. That's still his best throw, I think, just rare back and let it go and let his fast receivers run under it.”
Of more pressing concern to Hart is the Nighthawks' defensive effort. The unit, which also includes former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Cato June, yielded 26 points to the Hartford Colonials in its season opener last week. Omaha earned the victory behind a last-second touchdown pass from Jeff Garcia to Robert Ferguson.
“I think this game we'll have a better grasp on what to expect, having one game under our belt because it did take a little while to get going,” said Hart, who recovered a fumble in the Nighthawks win.
The game - the second consecutive Omaha sellout in a league that had never seen one before last week - is set for 8:30 p.m. EST. You can follow it here and watch it online here.
