Central Florida completed a conference-opening home-and-home sweep of local rival Lake-Sumter on Monday with an 11-7 victory over the Lakers.
The Patriots moved to 16-8 overall and 2-0 in the young Mid-Florida Conference season behind a quality start from Michael Paulk and a pair of explosive innings at the plate. Paulk (3-2) allowed 6 hits and 3 earned runs over 7 innings while striking out four. The offense produced 4 runs in the fourth and again in the sixth, paced by 3-run shots by Paul Karmeris and Bradley Goodson. Jordan Zech initiated the offense out of the leadoff spot with a 3-hit effort.
The win was a fitting encore to Saturday's MFC opener, an 8-0 win at Lake-Sumter defined by sophomore ace Matt Gendron's no-hitter. CF plays its final non-conference game on Tuesday, hosting Illinois school Lincoln Land at 2:30 p.m., then resumes its 24-game MFC slate with a home-and-home against St. Johns River. The Patriots visit Palatka on Wednesday, then host the Vikings on Friday at 3 p.m. as Gendron returns to the mound.
