Central Florida 74, FSC-Jacksonville 65 (WBB)

The Lady Patriots clinched second place in the Mid-Florida Conference in their regular season finale on Monday, beating FSC-Jacksonville 74-65.

The runner-up finish means CF will face the Southern Conference runner-up in the quarterfinals of the FCCAA State Tournament. That game is set for 9 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at Chipola College in Marianna, with the opponent yet to be determined between Indian River State and Palm Beach State.

Canvis Scott had 21 points for the Lady Patriots, while Markeshia Grant added 19.

CF rounds out its regular season at 19-10 overall and 5-4 in the MFC, two games behind champion Santa Fe and equal to Daytona State. The Lady Patriots earn the second seed by virtue of a 2-to-1 head-to-head series advantage over Daytona, which now has the unfortunate plight of facing Panhandle champion Gulf Coast in the state tournament opener.

The Lady Patriots enter the postseason with considerable momentum, a position that seemed unlikely just two weeks ago. On Feb. 6, CF lost to last-place FSC-Jacksonville in front of a homecoming crowd, hitting bottom in the standings (2-4) and in confidence. But the return of sophomore star Grant sparked a revival, and the Lady Patriots won tough overtime games at Santa Fe and Daytona before finishing up with Monday's second-place clincher.
