The Patriots earned a split of a softball doubleheader at Plant City on Thursday, beating Hillsborough 3-1 in the opener and dropping the late game 4-1.
Megan Still picked up the complete-game victory in the early game, allowing 3 hits and an earned run while striking out 4 and evening her season record to 2-2. Kelly Ondriezek, Katie Hayes, Erin McMahan and Jessica McClellan each had a pair of hits for CF.
The Patriots nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback in the nightcap before taking the loss. Jordan Rambo pitched 5 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, and the CF loaded the bases in the seventh to bring Hayes to the plate as the go-ahead run. But the sophomore's deep fly ball was hauled in at the warning track, stifling the late rally and narrowly preventing a Patriot sweep.
Freshman outfielder Samantha Stewart had 3 hits in the game. CF scored its run in unusual fashion, as McClellan drew a bases-loaded walk to score Heater Porter, who had reached after being hit by a pitch.
